Discrimination Terms and Definitions

Racial Discrimination Racial discrimination is present when people are treated differently than others who are similarly situated because they are members of a specific race. Color Discrimination Discrimination based on color occurs when individuals are treated less favorably than others who are similarly situated because of the color of their skin. Minority The smaller part of a group. A group within a country or state that differs in race, religion or national origin from the dominant group. Discrimination Discrimination is defined in civil rights law as unfavorable or unfair treatment of a person or class of persons in comparison with others who are not members of the protected class because of race, sex, color, religion, national origin, age, or physical/ Job Related Essential to job performance. The knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience necessary to perform a particular job. Sexual Harassment Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature. Ethnic Group A group of peoples who share a common religion, color, or national origin. Affirmative Action Positive steps taken by an employer to ensure equal employment opportunities for minorities, women, and persons with disabilities. Quota Fixed hiring and promotion rates based on race, sex, or other protected class standards, which must be met at all costs. Overt Discrimination Overt discrimination is a specific, observable action taken against a person or class of persons because of protected status, e.g., national origin.
